What are your rights?
A collective bargaining agreement will improve
- Job security,
- Workload and working conditions,
- Compensation & benefits, and
- Equity
As Maryland Community College Employees, we have
- The Legal Right to Organize. We can
✅ Form a union (We already did this! 😊)
✅ Join and participate in a union without fear of retaliation,
✅ Discuss pay, working conditions, and other union matters with colleagues,
✅ Organize without interference from the employer,
✅ Engage in collective activities
✅ Take legal action to obtain fair treatment.
- The Legal Right to Collective Bargaining. We can
✅ Negotiate a legally binding contract over wages, hours, and terms of employment;
✅ Record our terms as a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA); and
✅ Be represented by our union (REU) in bargaining and in adjustments to the CBA.
- The Legal Right to Fair Treatment & Due Process. We can
✅ Have a union representative with us in any disciplinary meetings.
✅ Establish a legally binding grievance procedure through collective bargaining.
✅ Grieve unfair treatment (disciplinary actions, workload disputes, contract violations)
- Protection Against Retaliation. This means that the administration
✅ Must bargain in good faith, and
✅ Cannot legally
- Threaten, coerce, or intimidate faculty members,
- Retaliate against union organizers or activists,
- Surveille union activities or meetings,
- Use public funds to campaign against the union,
- Interfere with union activities or discourage membership, nor
- Make unilateral changes to the CBA.
What If Your Rights Are Violated?
- Document any retaliation or interference from the administration.
- Report it to your union representatives immediately.
- File a formal complaint with the Maryland Public Employee Relations Board (PERB).
